Former Anchor Point resident Stephen B. Gardner died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Valley Hospital in Palmer. He was 46.

A private family memorial service will be held at the family residence in Palmer at 1 p.m. Friday. His ashes will be scattered over Cook Inlet, where he spent many years fishing.

Mr. Gardner was born to Paul and Billie Gardner on Nov. 25, 1956, in Oregon City, Ore. He moved to Alaska with his family in 1957, homesteading in the Anchor Point area. He moved to the Palmer area with his family in 1994. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam era and was a disabled veteran.

Mr. Gardner's hobbies included fishing, hunting and telling jokes He also enjoyed his 1967 Dodge Charger. He was an active member of the Valley Cruisers automobile club.

"In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to do what you can to get the government to give our veterans in Alaska the medical care that they deserve for serving their country," his family said.

He is survived by his parents, Paul Sr. and Billie Gardner of Palmer; daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Theron Koch of Anchorage; son, Michael Gardner of Canby, Ore.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Cheryl Gardner of Wasilla, Gary Gardner of Prineville, Ore., and David and his fiancee, Terri Creighton of Wasilla; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia Commanda of Canby, Nancy Hoover-Webb and Howard Crandell of Ninilchik, Sharon and Don Walker of Hubbard, Ore., and Debbie and Phil Bond of Aurora, Ore.; granddaughter, Katie Marie Koch of Anchorage; fiancee, Bridgette Barnum of Wasilla; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory of Wasilla.
