Knotted at one apiece, Soldotna's Tyler Best gave the Stars a 2-1 victory when he scored 52 seconds into overtime Tuesday night at the Jason Peterson Memorial Rink in Nikiski.
"We've got some things to work out. We've got a couple of tough games coming up this weekend against Delta Junction," said Nikiski coach Irv Smith. "But I still can't say enough about the boys and girls. We're a small squad. We're doing good."
Matt Hanley put the Bulldogs in front 1-0 when he scored in the first period, but the Stars tied it with 7:21 remaining in the third. Nikiski goaltender Tyler Bethune turned away 19 of the 21 shots that came his way.
"We're at home for the rest of the month. We've got eight league games. I'd like to come out with at least four wins out of this," Smith said, adding he is hoping his squad can make a run to the state tournament. "I feel confident that whoever we play (in the playoffs), I think we've got a chance to beat them and step up and go to the state tournament."
