ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Organizers of the Tesoro Iron Dog Race have delayed the start of the long-distance snowmobile race by one week.
The race's board of directors voted Wednesday to delay the start until Feb. 16 because of unsafe trail conditions.
The vote followed a review of the race course. Officials and volunteers recently covered the entire race route, which stretches between Fairbanks, Nome and Wasilla.
Several rivers have open water. Insufficient snow covers many miles of the southern trail route and there is no snow in some locations farther north, organizers said.
The board will meet again Jan. 30 for a final decision on the race based on trail conditions.
Fifty-six professional riders and 13 trail class riders have registered to run the event.
They will compete for more than $100,000 in prize money.
