Sass leads Copper Basin 300

Brent Sass, a musher from Eureka, had the lead in the Copper Basin 300 on late Saturday night. Aliy Zirkle, of Two Rivers, was in second. The race is expected to wrap up Monday.

From the peninsula, Kasilof's Anna Berington was in 15th, Kasilof's John Solem was in 28th, Sterling's Mitch Seavey was in 30th and Kasilof's Colleen Robertia was in 41st.

Hall takes 47th in IBU Cup

Nikiski High School graduate Zach Hall took 47th in an IBU Cup event in Nove Mesto, Czechoslovakia on Sunday.

Hall had just two misses on the range as he finished the 10-kilometer sprint in 25 minutes, 31.4 seconds.

Skyview's Jay Hakkinen finished 58th with four misses and a time of 25 minutes, 56.8 seconds.

Neither of the local athletes were called up to the World Cup for the next event in Ruhpolding, Germany.

Anchorage's Jeremy Teela finished 20th at the IBU Cup event on Sunday and will race in Ruhpolding.
