Former peninsula resident Stanley Edwin Long died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was 84.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, Iowa. Pastor Milt Johnson officiated. He was buried at Thornton Cemetery. His pallbearers were Marc Long, Gretchen Long, Hilary Long, Christie Willits, Andy Long, Julie Long, Jeff Gray and Rod Moore.

Mr. Long was born May 30, 1922, to Lorenzo and Anna Long in Thornton.

He married Loretta Long after returning to Thornton from Alaska. He worked in vocational agriculture and held a masters degree in guidance and education from Iowa State University. Mr. Long was a farmer for many years and after obtaining his degree worked in the Alaska educational system. He was active in community churches wherever he lived. He also served in the Marines during World War ll.

Mr. Long is preceded in death by his wife; infant son, Marion; and grandson, Kenneth.

He is survived by his children, Ed Long, Fran Long, Jackie Gray and Heidi Moore; brother, Howard Long and sister, Mildred Long.

Arrangements were made by Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.
