Betty Leah Wright Gibson
Soldotna resident Betty Leah Wright Gibson died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at the Heritage Place in Soldotna. She was 87.
Graveside services will be held in Newport, Penn., at a later date. Her ashes will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Newport Cemetery.
Mrs. Gibson was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Newport. She was a graduate of Newport High School and furthered her education at the Central Pennsylvania Business College. She worked as a secretary for Nationwide Insurance and the Newport School District. She also was a fiscal technician for the state of Pennsylvania Department of Education from which she retired in 1983. She moved to Soldotna in 1991. Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Hope Eternal United Methodist Church in Newport, the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport and the Order of the Eastern Star, Perry Chapter in Pennsylvania. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, as well as the Newport Alumni Association.
"Betty enjoyed every moment she spent with her granddaughters. Even though she loved living in Alaska to be near her family, she kept fond ties to Pennsylvania. Although we have to say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother and best friend, we take comfort in knowing she is now resting peacefully. She enjoyed reading and watching sports, especially hockey, baseball and golf. When she was younger she enjoyed dancing and traveling," her family said.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Gibson; parents, Ralph E. and Ruth O. (Acker) Wright; sister, Eva W. Sheaffer; and brother, Karl E. Wright.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia R. Gibson of Kenai; granddaughters, Meggan E. Galic of Kenai and Jennifer M. Galic of Soldotna; cousins, Nancy Yetter of Virginia Beach, Va. and Larry Seaman of Newport; nephews, Ronald Sheaffer of Walnut Creek, Calif., Wayne Sheaffer of Lewistown, Pa., Karl Sheaffer of Duncannon, Pa., David Sheaffer of Lewistown, Pa., and Scott E. Wright of Newport; niece, Karen W. Broughal of Bethlehem, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Janet Wright of Camp Hill, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the local libraries or animal shelters.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
