ANCHORAGE (AP) -- State Sen. Drue Pearce has been named to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
The committee is composed of civilians appointed by the Secretary of Defense to provide recommendations on issues that affect military women. The 30 to 40 members are appointed for three-year terms.
In recent years, the committee has focused its efforts on quality-of-life issues that affect both men and women in the military, including healthcare and housing.
The Coast Guard nominated Pearce for the post in recognition for her work on legislation to assist the Coast Guard in Alaska.
Pearce said she'll visit Alaska military installations to learn about the issues facing service men and women.
Pearce grew up in a military family. Her father is a decorated Marine.
