Oilers add two from University of California

The Oilers have added a pair of freshmen from the Pac-10 Conference's University of California.

Brian Horwitz, a 6-foot-2 outfielder from Encino, Calif., was named MVP of his high school league and was a member of the Youth Junior National USA Team.

Golden Bears teammate Creighton Kahoalii is a 6-foot catcher and was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2000 draft. Kahoalii is from Fremont, Calif., and is majoring in American Studies.

The latest edition of Collegiate Baseball has named Kenny Baugh and Jon Skaggs to its preseason All-America team. Both right-handed pitchers are from Rice University, with Baugh playing for the Oilers during the 1998 season and Skaggs in 1999.

The 2001 college season will be starting in the next several weeks. For the schedule of your favorite school, stop by the Oilers office on the corner of Cook and Main streets in Kenai or call 283-7133.

Oilers Corner is submitted weekly during the offseason by Mike Baxter, baseball operations manager for the Peninsula Oilers Alaska Baseball League team.
