Obituary

Posted: Sunday, January 12, 2003

Longtime Soldotna resident Harriett Irene Swanson Amundsen died Friday, Jan. 10, 2002, following a short illness at Heritage Place in Soldotna. She was 86.

A viewing will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday to service time at Soldotna Bible Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Soldotna Bible Chapel. Burial will follow the services in Spruce Grove Memorial Park.

Mrs. Amundsen was born May 22, 1916 in Missoula, Mont., the daughter of David and Teresa Swanson. She spent most of her childhood in Seattle and Mount Vernon, Wash., graduating from Seattle Pacific University as a teacher.

"During her courtship, she committed to go wherever the Lord wanted to take her," her family said. She married Hans Roald Amundsen in 1944 and the two moved to Nome in 1945 to serve as missionaries with the Evangelical Covenant Church until 1963. They moved to Soldotna in 1964 and began Missionary Aviation and Repair Center. She also worked for many years as a secretary for Soldotna Elementary and Soldotna Junior High schools.

"One of her passions was people. She loved them unconditionally. Another passion was her home and she combined these two loves by having an open heart and home to many. The memory of her beautiful smile, quick wit and practical love for God is her legacy to us," her family said.

Mrs. Amundsen is survived by her husband of 58 years; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Gary Klodt; son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Amundsen; son, Tim Amundsen; grandchildren, Amber and Hans and his wife, Misty; great-granddaughter, Krysta, all of Alaska; and a sister, Eleanore Bloom of Turlock, Calif.

Memorial donations may be sent to Missionary Aviation and Repair Center, P.O. Box 511, Soldotna, AK 99669 or the Amundsen Education Center, P.O. Box 4006, Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
