The school got into the holiday giving spirit before the break with its annual canned food drive. In the guise of a class competition, students and teachers were encouraged to bring canned food items for donation to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. During the two weeks, more than 1,700 cans were collected. Congratulations to the VICA organization for sponsoring the food drive with the assistance of the student council.
The giving spirit continues with a penny drive to aid victims of the Dec. 26 tsunamis. The school's penny drive brings competition to giving. Pennies and bills of denominations count toward the class total. Silver coins count against the total. All proceeds will be given to the Red Cross and earmarked for the tsunami relief effort. Community members going through the school are encouraged to add coins to the efforts.
The school will be on a finals schedule Thursday and Friday. Finals for periods one, three, and five will be Thursday and periods two, four, and six will be Friday.
The next site council meeting will be at 5 p.m. Jan. 20.
