Homer Community Schools hosts film festival

Homer Community Schools will host a Mountainfilm film festival tonight starting at 7 at the Mariner Theater at Homer High School. Mountainfilm of Telluride combines adventure, mountaineering, unique personalities and environmental and social messages in films that tell viewers about the world they live in and would like to live in. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students through 12th grade, and $30 for a family. They are available at the Homer Community Schools office, the Homer Bookstore, the Homer Council of the Arts, Bunnell Street Gallery and at the door. For more information, call (907) 235-6090.

Homer Community Schools adds winter classes

The following new classes available through Homer Community Schools are not listed in the program catalog. For more information or to register, call (907) 235-6090.

Tarot Symbology -- Learn to use and understand the symbolism of tarot as a tool for personal growth and transformation. The class meets from Thursdays from 6:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 to 27. The cost is $50.

Chinese Essence Qigong -- Learn the art of developing internal energy and directing it to balance and enhance natural healing resources in the body. The class meets from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays this week through Feb. 18. The cost is $60, plus a book.

Simple Cooking that Tastes Great -- Increase your energy and mental clarity with a high-vitality diet that tastes as incredible as it looks. Also, learn the simplicity of menu planning. The class is designed for youth and parents interested in exploring healthier lifestyles. It will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, this week through Feb. 19 at Homer High School. The cost is $25 per person or $35 for a parent and student team.

Computer Class Drop-In -- Learn what you want at your own pace. Staff will be available to help participants learn Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Frontpage as well as how to customize a desktop, build a Web page and work with advanced e-mail. Ages 4 and older. The lab will be open from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through March 11. Cost is $5 to register, plus $2 a visit for students 11 and younger and $5 per visit for students 12 and older.

Increasing Self Understanding -- Create a collage of images representing your image to gain insight on the different between how you see yourself and how others see you. Share your insights in pairs or small groups. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 6 to 27. The cost is $50.
