Area students earn high marks
Randi Steinbrecher of Seward was given the Chancellor's Award for the fall semester at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The award is presented to students with a grade point average of 3.5 or better. Steinbrecher is an art major at the university.
Alison Marie Eskelin of Soldotna was named to the Dean's List for the 2001 fall quarter at Eastern Oregon University. Qualifying students must have fulfilled a minimum of 12 graded hours with a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
Cadet Brett Merrill of Soldotna was named to the President's List at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. To be named to the list a cadet must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or better during the semester.
Kenai woman given lifetime achievement award
Iola Kelley Banks of Kenai has been invested as a laureate of the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England, Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of an outstanding contribution to education.
Investiture as a laureate of the award is only conferred after a thorough evaluation of each candidate's qualifications by the members of the IBC Research and Advisory Board. This award is made to select noteworthy individuals across the globe in recognition of their lifetime accomplishments.
Nikiski Hoop Shoot winners announced
An Elks Hoop Shoot Contest was held at elementary schools in Nikiski in November. The winners at Nikiski Elementary School for the boys were Isaac Couch, 8 to 9 division; Calvin Williams, 10 to 11 division; and Jeremy Narlock, 12 to 13 division. The winners for the girls were Christmas Graham, 8 to 9 division; Shenae Wright, 10 to 11 division; and Heather Gunn, 12 to 13 division.
At North Star Elementary the winners for the boys were Sam Taylor, 8 to 9 division, Bob Seater, 10 to 11 division; and Adrian Currasco, 12 to 13 division. The winners for the girls were Shanda Chenault, 8 to 9 division; Tasha Thompson, 10 to 11 division; and Whitney Doty, 12 to 13 division.
These winners will participate in the area championship held Saturday at the Kenai Recreation Center.
