North Star Elementary

Posted: Wednesday, January 14, 2004

This is the last week to vote for a new name for the consolidated North Star and Nikiski elementary school. The community is invited to help select a name. Interested people may vote at either North Star or Nikiski Elementary until Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Nikiski Fire Station 1.

The kindergartners from Ms. Bingham's class are enjoying the beautiful Alaska winter this week by decorating the classroom with large star snowflakes for a craft project. They used paint on black paper to draw their starry night sky. They also studied how glaciers, snow, rain and wind can change the Alaska landscape.

The first- and second-graders in Mrs. Lundy's and Mrs. Thye's classes are being given end-of-the-quarter assessments in reading, writing and math.

Sunday is the birthday of A.A. Milne, the author of the "Winnie the Pooh" books. The students in Mrs. Thye's class helped to create a showcase display honoring this author. In science, they are studying the sky and the seasons.

The students in Mrs. Lundy's class are learning about gravity and magnetism in their study of forces. In health, they are studying nutrition.
