Seward's Smith scores silver medal

Aubrey Smith, a graduate of Seward High School, won a silver medal at the 2004 Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Championships Saturday in Rumford, Maine.

Smith crossed the finish line in the 30-kilometer race with two other skiers. Sarah Konrad won in 1 hour, 30 minutes, 22.4 seconds, Smith was second in 1:30:25.6 and Katrin Migun was third in 1:30:27.1

Smith had a number of other solid finishes at the championships. She was 10th in the 15-kilometer classical race, 13th in the 5-kilometer classical race, seventh in the 5-kilometer freestyle race and 12th in the sprint race.

Kasilof's Hakkinen competes in World Cup

Jay Hakkinen, a graduate of Skyview High School, competed in a World Cup biathlon race in Pokljuka, Slovenia, recently.

Hakkinen finished 45th in a 10-kilometer sprint Thursday. He missed just one target in that race, and was looking forward to moving up in Saturday's 12.5-kilometer pursuit. However, strong winds fouled up his shooting in that race, and he finished 46th.
