FAIRBANKS (AP) -- One of Fairbanks' Sam Goody stores closed last week as part of a cost-trimming effort by Best Buy Co., its parent company.
The closure of the University Center mall store was part of more than 100 closures of Sam Goody and Suncoast stores throughout the nation because of the decline in sales of prerecorded music and the slowdown in customer traffic at malls, the company said last week.
Best Buy said the stores it closed included 90 Sam Goody music stores and about 20 Suncoast video stores whose leases expired or were operating on month-to-month leases. About 600 people were laid off, the company said.
The Sam Goody in University Center was the only closure in Alaska.
Staff at the Bentley Mall, the site of Fairbanks' other Sam Goody, reported that the store is performing well and that there are no plans to close it.
