John Joseph Brooks
Former Alaska resident John Joseph Brooks died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Redding, Calif. He was 91.
A private memorial is pending.
Mr. Brooks was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Marble, Colo., to John and Anna Brooks. He married Gerolynn Brooks on May 16, 1944, in Littleton, Colo.
Mr. Brooks graduated college at Western State in Colorado. He worked as a accountant in the oil industry for 40 years in California and Alaska.
In 1957 Mr. Brooks made a successful bid for the first major oil strike in Alaska, on the Swanson River oil fields near Kenai. He lived in Anchorage, then Soldotna, from 1970 to 2001.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing, and was an avid reader. During his early years in Alaska, Mr. Brooks began writing poetry.
He is survived by his wife, Gerolynn; daughters, Marcia, Jean and Marilyn; and grandsons, John, Aaron and Robin.
Arrangements were made by Allen and Dahl Funeral Home in Redding.
