MILAN, Mich. (AP) -- An elementary school's group hug has been certified as the world's largest by Guinness World Records.
Paddock Elementary School organized the hug on the last day of classes in June at a field behind the school.
Officially, 1,478 huggers stood hand-to-shoulder for 10 seconds to accomplish the feat, shattering the previous record of 899.
Joanne Lund, a secretary at Paddock, told The Monroe Evening News for a story Monday that she received the confirmation letter from Guinness last month.
School officials mailed the British organization pictures, recordings and signatures of everyone involved in the event to get the record confirmed.
''Once the idea got rolling, things came easily,'' Lund said.
''Everyone was excited about it.''
