Technology helps Alaskans, elected officials keep in touch

Posted: Friday, January 16, 2004

With the opening this week of the legislative session, it might not be a bad idea for all Alaskans to expand on the mayors' question and consider what they would do if they were a legislator or if they were in the governor's shoes. And then share their ideas with legislators and the governor. Who knows? Those ideas may be able to help the state a lot.

Keeping in touch with elected officials and elected officials keeping in touch with their constituents should be an ongoing process. The better the communication, the better government will be.

As part of their communication with those who put them in office, legislators who represent the Kenai Peninsula plan to have a constituent teleconference the first Thursday of every month beginning at 7 p.m. The first will be Feb. 5. People can participate at their nearest Legislative Information Office.

The state's LIOs are a wealth of information for those wanting to know what's happening in Juneau. Today's Internet technology also makes staying in touch easier than ever. Legislators are as close as an e-mail away; plus, bills can be followed through the Bill Action and Status Inquiry System on the Internet. In addition, daily legislative activity can be viewed on the "Gavel to Gavel" broadcast.

To help residents stay in touch, the following is the contact information for the peninsula Legislative Information Offices and the peninsula's legislative delegation, as well as some important Internet addresses.
