The Kenai Central High School boys cross-country ski team pulled together to claim three of the top five individual places at the Kardinal Klassic ski meet at the Kenai Nordic Trails Saturday, winning the team title.

Soldotna placed three skiers in the top five to claim the girls title while Skyview's Elisabeth Habermann and Noah King raced away with the top individual girls and boys finishes in the 5-kilometer classic race.

"Our team performed really well today," said Kenai's Christopher Hall, who led the Kardinals with his third-place finish.

Clay Nelson was fourth for Kenai, Trent Semmens finished fifth and Kyle Latz was eighth.

"Our team is kind of coming together right now," said Hall.

While the Kardinals skied well as a team, they found themselves chasing Skyview's King, who completed the course in 15 minutes, 55 seconds to win the event. Soldotna's Steve Olendorff was second in 16:30.

"Noah and I have gone back and forth — not so much this year, but last year," said Olendorff. "He's really picked it up this year. I'm trying to stay up with him."

The mostly flat terrain of the Kenai Nordic Trails, which are rolled out on the Kenai Golf Course, was a change of pace for skiers who spent last weekend climbing hills at Tsalteshi Trails.

Olendorff said that given the flat terrain, he was pleased with his finish as he usually skies better on hilly courses. He also said he felt slow out on the course, in part because fresh snow falling during the race made for a little slower going.

"The snow was kind of slow compared to last weekend. It's slow for everyone, so you do have to work a little harder, but that's just because it was new snow" said Kenai's Synneva Hagen-Lillevik, who finished fourth in the girls race.

Habermann skated away from the girls field. Her winning time of 18:20 was 1:11 faster than that of runner-up Katy Pankoski, but Pankoski's Soldotna's teammates pulled through to edge Skyview by 45 seconds in the team standings. Katie Franzmann was third, Brittany Osland was fifth and Amanda Boll was 11th for the Stars.

"Our team did really good," Franzmann said. "I'm really proud of what they've done. I'm just glad I have a team like this to train with."
