Soldier sentenced in case involving sex with underage girls

Posted: Wednesday, January 17, 2001

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A 20-year-old soldier from the Army's Fort Wainwright was sentenced to five years in a military prison after pleading guilty to having consensual sex with two underage girls, fondling two others and then lying about it to investigators.

Pfc. Travis Puckett had faced up to 82 years in prison under terms of a plea agreement.

Puckett chose to be sentenced Tuesday by an Army court-martial judge rather than a panel of at least five soldiers.

Puckett also was reduced in rank to the lowest grade, forfeited some pay and will be given a bad conduct discharge. The discharge will remain on Puckett's record for the rest of his life.

Puckett conceded he had sex with a 13-year-old girl twice at a Fairbanks house he was watching for a friend and later with a 15-year-old girl at her friend's North Pole house.

He also admitted he briefly fondled a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl, both in North Pole.

Puckett admitted knowing the girls were underaged and that it was illegal.
