ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Snowmobile racers will be vying for a $105,000 purse in the 18th annual Iron Dog, race officials announced Thursday.
The 1,971-mile race is set for Feb. 18, with 32 pro class teams scheduled to depart Wasilla Lake at 9 a.m. for a run to Big Lake for a restart at 11 a.m. The route then goes to Nome, and the first racers are scheduled to reach the finish line at Pike's Landing in Fairbanks on Feb. 24.
Prize money will be paid to the top 10 teams, with the first-place racers sharing $25,000 and the second-place team earning $18,000.
There also will be prizes of $3,000 for the top rookie team, $2,000 for the team that displays the spirit of the race through good sportsmanship and resourcefulness of the trail and $500 for the fastest time between Tanana and Pike's Landing.
