VALDEZ (AP) -- Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. shut down operations at its Valdez marine terminal Wednesday after workers discovered a light sheen inside the boom at Berth 4.
The tank vessel SeaRiver Baytown was in the later stages of loading operations at the berth when the sheen was detected at about 10:30 a.m., the company said.
The sheen was contained within boom surrounding the ship.
An inspection of the vessel revealed a hairline crack in a starboard tank approximately 3 feet above the water line.
Alyeska says the preliminary estimate of the spill volume was less than one teaspoon.
