Jumping with a purpose

Posted: Thursday, January 18, 2001

Polar bear jumpers Beth Kellie, left, and Mary Kennedy perform a dance for the staff and faculty of Northstar Elementary School Monday, dressed in the angelic tutus they will be wearing when they dive into the icy waters of Resurrection Bay during the annual Polar Bear Jump in Seward on Saturday.

They danced to a song they made up to the tune of "Eight Days a Week" by the Beatles. The women, parents of Northstar students, are raising money in honor of another Northstar parent who died of cancer and a Northstar teacher who is being treated for cancer. Funds raised go to the American Cancer Society. The Nikiski duo, with three companions, John Kwietniak and Nelson Amen of Kenai and Joe Deveaux of Soldotna, collectively known as the Tri-City Angels, have raised close to $4,000.
