Snaring seminar to be offered
There will be a snaring seminar offered at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge headquarters Jan. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. Trappers will be demonstrating various trapping methods. This seminar is required for trappers to check their snares every seven days on the refuge. This seminar is not the trapper orientation class needed to obtain a permit to trap on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. For more information, call 262-7021.
Bear viewing permits open for application
Applications for permits to view brown bears at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary are being accepted through March 1. Applications must be sent by mail, postmarked no later than March 1 and be received in Anchorage by March 15. The nonrefundable application fee is $25 per person. Three people may apply on a single application. Approximately 250 permits will be awarded by lottery.
The bear viewing season is early June through late August. Most viewing in June is done on Mikfik Creek, where a small run of red salmon arrives early. In July and August, the bears shift to McNeil Falls to feed on chum salmon. Regular permits are good for four days and are $150 for Alaska residents and $350 for nonresidents. Standby permits are available, but they do not guarantee access to Mikfik or McNeil Falls. Viewing is limited to 10 people a day.
