Kenai sweeps in Nome

Behind 22 points from senior Nathan Byrd and 17 from senior Daniel Gustkey, the Kenai boys easily defeated Bethel, 80-45, in the opening round of the Nome Subway Showdown on Thursday.

Josh Lazaro and Nate Saltzgiver added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Kardinals, who jumped out to a 24-11 lead after eight minutes and never trailed the rest of the way.

Alban Malaj paced the Warriors with 22 points.

The Kenai girls also edged Nome, 43-36.

In other tourney action, the Nome boys beat Point Hope, 105-91, while the Bethel girls topped Point Hope, 55-37.

South boys 87, Homer 55

Aaron Stevens collected 15 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Wolverines past the Mariners on Thursday in the Rock Classic at South High School.

Anthony Cousins and Kevin Cousins combined for 27 points for South.

Kirk Cortez paced Homer with 14 points and Michael Pate added 11.

In other action, Palmer edged Sitka in overtime, 51-47.

Houston boys 65, Cook Inlet Academy 50

Four players reached double-digit scoring in leading the Hawks past the Eagles in the first round of the Heritage Christian School Invitational on Thursday.

CIA was led by Shane Moffis and Scott Litchfield, who collected 20 and 14 points, respectively.

In other action, the Heritage boys handled Dillingham, 72-28.

Dillingham girls 47, Ninilchik 32

Heidi Andrews scored 11 points and Ginny Bobbitt added 10 in leading visiting Dillingham past Ninilchik on Thursday.

Ashley Bart paced Ninilchik with 11 points while Laniccia Mireles chipped in nine.
