Norman Richard Bucy died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage from complications related to cancer. He was 81.

A memorial service were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 8110 Jewel Lake Road in Anchorage. There was a Rosary preceding the service at 10:45 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Social Services or to the American Lung Association.

Mr. Bucy was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Seattle to Francis and Ida Bucy. He was the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle in 1939.

He came to Juneau in 1941 with the Army Signal Corps where he met and married his wife, Colleen V. Hellan, in 1943. Together they raised nine children. While in the Signal Corps, he served in Attu, King Salmon, Seattle, Barrow and Fairbanks, where he retired from the Army in 1964. He worked for RCA in Fairbanks, moved to Anchorage in 1974 and worked for Pacific Fruit and Produce in Anchorage from 1976 until his retirement in 1986.

He enjoyed skiing, tennis, dancing, fishing, hunting, golf, cards and crosswords. He loved spending time at the family gold mine and with his best friend, his black Labrador retriever Cinderella.

He was an active member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, attending daily Mass for many years.

"Through his life he shared his love for sports and the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. In the words of one grandson, 'He has a special twinkle in his eye' and many remarked on his ability to convey his spirit with a single wink," his family said.

"He will be missed for his kind, humorous, and gentle spirit."

He is survived by his brother, John Hawkins of Port Townsend, Wash.; sisters, Violet Trulin and Daisy Brown of Aberdeen, Wash.; children, Rik and Donna Bucy of Soldotna, Kathy and John Trautner of Girdwood, Bobby and Ron Buesing of Denver, Jan Bucy Of Seattle, Barbra and Robert Howard of Palmer, Gary and Roxanne Bucy of Anchorage, Ken Bucy of Anchorage, Michael Bucy and Marta Lastufka of Juneau, Kristin Shindle and Bill Blydenburgh of Anchorage; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
