Ninilchik girls start season with Heritage Tourney crown

The Ninilchik High School girls basketball team swept their games at the Heritage Christian Tournament, defeating the Delta Huskies 66-21 on Friday and finishing off the tourney with a 40-38 win over the host Eagles Saturday.

The Ninilchik boys finished the tournament with a 2-1 mark, defeating Delta 64-55 Friday but dropping a 62-49 decision to the Eagles Saturday.

Whitney Leman had the hot hand for the Wolverines in Saturday's game, scoring 25 points, including a trio of treys.

Leman had 16 to pace the Wolverines in Friday's game, while Molly Bosick had 13 and Janelle Moerlein scored 10.

Buck Kvasnikoff scored 29 and Jesse Hostetter chipped in with 20 points to lead the Ninilchik boys past Delta Friday.

Hostetter repeated the feat Saturday, scoring 20 against Heritage, and Kvasnikoff finished with 16 points, but the Wolverines were unable to keep pace with the Eagles.

The Kardinals jumped out to an early lead and cruised through the second half, defeating the visiting Mariners in a Region III/4A game Saturday.

Erica Shinn led the Kardinals with 17 points while Erin Smith and Karli Knudsen each netted 13 points.

Caitlin Crandall led the Homer effort with 16 points while Rose Sinnhuber had 14 and Bailey Lowney had 11.

Tara DeRuwe scored 16 points to lead the Seahawks to a District 3/3A win over Anchorage Christian Schools Saturday in Seward.

Ruth Banse and Willow Hetrich each scored nine points for the Seahawks while Kristie Regis netted eight points and Tara Ganser and Michelle Dieckgraeffe each chipped in with seven points.
