Community Schools

The following is a list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week. It is printed as a reminder to registered participants. If you are interested in a class or activity but are not preregistered, call the Soldotna Community Schools office at 262-6768.

Tuesday

No classes or activities at Soldotna Middle School due to a districtwide in-service.

Wednesday

Indoor soccer with coach Tony Lewis -- Students in grades nine through 12 are welcome to join in pick up games from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays in the Soldotna Middle School gym. Games will run for the next eight weeks. The cost is $1 per night.

Hall walking -- Teens and adults are invited to walk the Soldotna Middle School hallways and stay out of the cold. Eight laps is one mile. The school will be open from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning this week. The cost is $10 per month.

Thursday

Registration for winter classes offered through Soldotna Community Schools will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School library.

Adult-teen beginning pottery throwing with Charlie LaForge, studio potter -- Explore the process of clay on the potter's wheel with demonstrations by the instructor. The class will cover the fundamentals and elements of throwing. Participants should wear old clothes, and the class is not recommended for those with back or wrist problems. The class is open to teens and adults, with a 10-person maximum. It will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. for eight weeks in the Soldotna High School ceramics studio. The cost is $130, including all supplies.

Adoption information with Cathy Sturman, representative for World Association for Children and Parents -- This will be an adoption information meeting for single or married people who are interested in adopting from Thailand, Korea, China, Russia, India or the United States. Information will be provided about the WACAP agency and procedures and steps for any adoption. There also will be a question-and-answer time. The meeting is open to adults, and will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 1. There is no fee.

Gentlemen's basketball -- Men 18 and older are invited to play pick up games on two courts from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Soldotna Middle School gym for the next 11 weeks. The cost is $4 per night. No children are allowed.

Basic woodworking with Louise Heite -- The class is an introduction to the use of power tools and to simple wood working, including basic finishing techniques. Participants will make a project of their choice. Teen-agers and adults are welcome, and women are especially encouraged to attend. There is a six-person minimum and 12-person maximum for the class. It will meet for six weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School wood shop. The cost is $40, plus materials.

Additional classes

The following classes were received too late for listing in the winter brochure. They will be offered if enough people register:

Spanish with Gnel Khachatryan, a student at the University of Buenos Aires -- Learn to speak and understand Spanish from a native. The class will include the basic fundamentals, such as grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading. The class is open to students age 7 through adult, and there is a six-person minimum. The class will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Soldotna Middle School room 1 for four weeks starting Feb. 4. The cost is $45.

Six-count swing dance with Raymond Hanson and Mary Beth Nearing -- The class will include basic foot work, lead-follow skills, moves and music appreciation. Participants should wear leather soled or nonmarking sliding shoes. Do not wear shoes outdoors prior to class. Participants also should expect to rotate partners. Teens and adults are welcome, and there is a 12-person minimum and 50-person maximum. The class will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 28 in the Soldotna Middle School multipurpose room. It will meet for six weeks, excluding Feb. 18. The cost is $30.

Homer Community Schools

The following is a list of new classes to be offered through Homer Community Schools. These classes are not in the winter program. For more information, call (907) 235-6090.

Increasing self understanding -- Using a project developing a two-sided collage, discover how you see yourself and how others see you, then share your insights in pairs or small groups. The class meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28. The cost is $25.

Tarot symbology -- Learn to use and understand the symbolism of tarot as a tool for personal growth and transformation. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 6 to 27. The cost is $50.

These classes still have openings: Women's art and discussion group; the creative challenge: going deeper; basket making: large tote; introduction to crystal singing bowl therapy; family and friends CPR; Spanish for beginners; intermediate-advanced Spanish; boating skills and seamanship; chants and rounds from around the world; and Web page design fro nonprofits.
