CARTS acknowledges financial support of area business

The Community Partners involved with the Central Area Rural Transit System Inc. (CARTS) would like to thank Unocal for its generous support to provide transportation for area children and students. Because of the difficulty many parents have in transporting their children, especially Sears kindergartners, to or from school, some young children were unable to attend school. Unocal stepped up to the plate and graciously provided funds to allow CARTS to transport these children.

Please join CARTS in recognizing this important contribution to our community.

Boys and Girls Club says thanks for successful basketball season

The Boys and Girls Club fifth-sixth grade 2000 basketball league recently concluded another great season. Due to the help and support of our wonderful community, nearly 2,000 fifth- and sixth-graders from all over the area were given the opportunity to be a part of a team, learn and improve their basketball skills, make friends and, most importantly, participate and have fun.

The Boys and Girls Club strives to offer quality youth programs encouraging our young people to grow and develop into productive, responsible and caring citizens. Our sports program is a wonderful way to teach valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, responsibility and respect. Many, many thanks to the basketball coaches who volunteered countless hours to work with our kids, to be excellent role models and to be caring adults in our kids' lives.

They are: Mike Gustkey, Doug Blossom, Brad Carver, Butch Leman, Leonard Ball, Eric Skjold, Kelly Saltzgiver, Phil Sheridan, Daryl Sutton, Mike Vanderford, Sharon Dallmann, Kevin Walker, Travis Carroll, Dan Poppin, Doug McAuliffe, Rus Hitchcock Sr., Teresa Saner, Toni Steward, Dave Blossom, Steve Tachick, Jeff Dallmann, Rus Hitchcock Jr., Ron Fay, Kelly Brewer, Joe Pazar, Todd Syverson, John Steckel, John Kennedy, Joy Skjold, Rod VanSaun.

Also, the Boys and Girls Club greatly appreciates the community-minded businesses that gave their financial support by sponsoring a team: Mike Vanderford of the Ninilchik Inlet View Lodge, Michelle and Mike Beals of the Timber Wolf Lodge, Dennis Miller of Soldotna Computer, Scott McLane of McLane Consulting Group, Tesoro, Phillips Alaska Inc., Law Office of George M. Kapolchok, Phone Directors Co.

Their support helps ensure our program remains a quality one.

Special thanks to Kelly Keating and Ken Cox of Blazy Construction for building and donating a much needed new basketball timer/scorer's table. We are truly lucky to live in a place where people are so willing to get involved and give back to their community.
