Liebner tops field in Homer

Andy Liebner of Soldotna High School won the Junior 1/Older Junior men's race Saturday at McNeil Canyon Ski Trails in the third Junior Olympic Qualifying Series race of the year.

Liebner skated 15 kilometers in 46 minutes to beat runner-up Charlie Renfro by 46 seconds. The Junior 1/Older Junior category is for those born from 1984 to 1981.

The Junior Olympic Qualifying Series, which consists of six races, is used to qualify skiers for the Junior Olympics. The series continues today at McNeil Canyon with classical races.

Liebner was not the only skier in the top 10 at the J1/OJ race. Skyview skiers also had a strong showing with Jacob Fellman taking sixth in 47:38 and Adam Tressler nabbing seventh in 47:47.

Brent Knight of Soldotna rounded out the top 10 finishes for the peninsula in the J1/OJ race by coming in 10th in 48:37.

The peninsula also did well in the J1/OJ women's race, putting two skiers in the top 10.

Skyview's Amy Lambe finished fifth in the 10-kilometer skate race with a time of 37:46. Lambe was about one minute behind winner Christina May.

Homer's Ida Martin picked up the other top 10 finish for the peninsula. Martin was 10th in 38:57.

The peninsula also got two finishers in the top 10 in the girls junior 2 race, which is for those born from 1985 to 1986.

Skyview's Stephanie Lambe finished the three-kilometer skate race with a time of 12:31, good for eighth place. Soldotna's Rachel Goldstein was right behind Lambe, finishing ninth in 12:34. Davya Baker of Fairbanks won the race with a time of 11:19.

Kenai's Jordan Engel provided the lone top 10 finish for the peninsula in the boys Junior 2 race. Engel skated three kilometers in 10:51 to finish 33 seconds behind winner Espen Haugen.
