Homer woman missing, feared dead after kayak overturns

Posted: Monday, January 21, 2002

HOMER (AP) -- A Homer woman is missing and feared dead after a weekend kayaking mishap near Tutka Bay.

Bethany Lynn, 26, was kayaking with Gabriel Kehn, 25, of Homer when their kayak overturned in heavy seas and strong winds, across Kachemak Bay from Homer, Alaska State Troopers said.

Investigators said the two had been in the water for some time before they were able to reach the shore of Casey Island.

Troopers say they think Lynn succumbed to hypothermia. She was unresponsive after reaching the island. Kehn managed to climb to a steep slope to safety, but was unable to carry Lynn from the beach.

A Homer man found Kehn shortly before 2 p.m. on Saturday. A Coast Guard helicopter crew searched for Lynn, but there was no sign of her.
