Deadline for T-200 riders today

Today is the last day for children ages 5 to 14 to submit a request to ride in the sleds of mushers in the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race. An emphasis on challenged, disadvantaged or disabled children is placed on the selection process. Past participants are not eligible. For more information, call Mya Renken at 283-1991.

Hazard trees presentation slated

The Central Peninsula Master Gardeners will begin its winter lecture series from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Dr. Robert Wheeler, a forestry specialist for the Cooperative Extension Service in Fairbanks, will be the featured speaker. His topic will be tree growth, development, damage, response and how to assess the condition of trees and if anything can be done about it. For more information, call Janice at 262-5824.

Drug abuse prevention workshop scheduled

The Committee Action Coalition for Prevention will hold its initial training sessions for the Communities that Care planning system Jan. 28 and 29 at the Kenai River Center. The workshop is free to all who call ahead and reserve space. Participants will include community leaders from area schools, health care, law enforcement, clergy, parents and students. The session will focus on identifying/reducing risk factors that lead to unhealthy behaviors in youth and increasing the protective factors that the community can develop to reduce substance abuse. The meeting will begin on the Jan. 28 at 8:30 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. Lunch is included. The Jan. 29 meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and run until noon. Reading carnival planned

The Kenai Peninsula Reading Council will host the third annual Peninsula Reading Carnival on Jan. 29.
