Feeken nabs third in Homer

Posted: Monday, January 22, 2001

Jason Feeken, a graduate of Skyview High School, finished third Sunday in the men's race at the fourth Junior Olympic Qualifying Series race of the year, held at McNeil Canyon Ski Trails in Homer.

Feeken, who currently skis for the University of Alaska Anchorage, used the classical technique to cover 7.5 kilometers in 23 minutes, 44 seconds.

Feeken finished 13 seconds behind Erik Flora, the winner of the men's race.

The Junior Olympic Qualifying Series is used to qualify skiers for the Junior Olympics, although not all racers there are eligible. For example, both Feeken and Flora were not eligible because they are in the Senior Male category, which is for those born from 1971 to 1980.

Soldotna High School's Andy Liebner is eligible because he races in the Older Junior/Junior 1 category, for those born from 1981 to 1984.

Liebner, who finished first in a skate race Saturday, practically locked up a spot on the Junior Olympic team by finishing second in the J1/OJ category Sunday. Liebner did 7.5 kilometers in 24:35, just six seconds behind winner Charlie Renfro. Liebner was the lone peninsula athlete in the top 10 in the J1/OJ men's race.

In the J1/OJ women's race, Skyview High School's Amy Lambe finished second by using the classical technique to cover five kilometers in 19:48. Lambe was 16 seconds behind winner Christina May. Homer High School's Ida Martin also made the top 10, finishing sixth in 20:29.

In the five-kilometer boys Junior 2 race, for those born from 1985 to 1986, Kenai's Jordan Engel provided the top peninsula finish by nabbing 11th. Engel's time was 19:59, about 1:50 behind winner Matthew Johnson.

Finally, the peninsula had two top-10 finishes in the girls five-kilometer Junior 2 race. Skyview's Stephanie Lambe was seventh in 21:49 while Soldotna's Rachel Goldstein was eighth in 21:54.

The winner of the girls Junior 2 race was Ingvild Pedersen, who blistered the field with a 19:34. Pedersen's time was good enough to beat all of the J1/OJ competitors.
