Painting group to meet
The Kenai Watercolor Group has informal painting gatherings at 11 a.m. every other Saturday at the Kenai Fine Arts Center on Cook Avenue in Kenai.

Community choir holds rehearsals
The Kenai Peninsula College community choir holds rehearsals at 7 p.m. Mondays at Christ Lutheran Church. The choir is rehearsing Carl Orff's cantata, "Carmina Burana," which it will perform in April with the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra and singers from the Homer area. Central peninsula singers meet Mondays at Christ Lutheran Church and southern peninsula singers meet Thursdays in Homer. Singers who wish to join the group do not necessarily have to be able to read notes.

Juried show open for entry
The Pratt Museum is accepting entries for its Juried Art Show 2004. Preliminary judging will be from 35 mm slides only. Each artist may submit up to four entries in any media. Only works not previously shown and completed in the last two years will be accepted.
Slide entries must be received by the museum by 5 p.m. Jan. 29. Each entry must be accompanied by an artist entry form and a $20 entry fee. Forms are available at the museum, by mail and by fax. For more information, call (907) 235-8635.
Pratt Museum closed for maintenance
The Pratt Museum is closed (except for WHIZ Kids programs) through Feb. 2 for yearly maintenance and repairs. The business office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The museum's annual membership meeting and a public program will be held at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the museum. The evening will begin with a community finger food potluck from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a business meeting and the election of new board members at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m. Dr. Aron Crowell of the Smithsonian's Arctic Studies Center in Anchorage will give a presentation on the Kenai Fjords Archaeology and Oral History project at the Aialik Bay, Verdant Cove dig, which took place last summer.
Kids' art classes offered

Art guild to meet

Talent show applications available
Applications are available for the 2004 Nikiski Talent Show to be held March 6. Forms can be picked up at Nikiski Middle-Senior High School, the Nikiski Post Office, M & M Market, Great Northern Video, in Kenai at Old Time Music, or call 776-3456 to have a form faxed to you.

Writing submissions accepted for annual event
Submissions are being accepted for the seventh annual Central Peninsula Writer's Night. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m. Feb. 27. Selected writers will be notified March 5.
There will be a rehearsal at 6 p.m. March 10 and Writers Night will be held at 7 p.m. March 11. Submission forms may be picked up at the Kenai Community Library or may be downloaded at kenaiwriter. net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32.

Logo design contest announced
The Seward Chamber of Commerce is accepting artwork designs for the 2004 Mount Marathon Race logo that will be used on T-shirts, pins, posters and finishers' patches. The prize for the designer of the selected logo is $400.
The design must fit on an 8/5- by 11-inch piece of paper and have four-color printing capabilities. Artwork must be signed by the artist. All submissions become the property of the chamber with credit given to the artist. The design must include the following information: Mt. Marathon Race, July 4, 2004, 77th running, Seward, Alaska, finisher or survivor (this will be replaced with "volunteer" for volunteer shirts). The submission deadline is March 14. Students' stories, photos wanted
Alaska Youth for Environmental Action invites Alaska elementary through college students to submit their personal stories and photos about unique wild places, either land or marine, in all regions of Alaska. Stories and photos will be compiled into a booklet that will include the natural history of these regions and a resource directory of organizations and agencies. Writers are encouraged to describe a wild place and tell why it's important, including stories of time spent there, what changes the area faces in the future and what they hope to share about the place with their descendants. Written submissions are limited to 700 words. Photos of people enjoying or using these areas also are welcome. Submitted photos will not be returned.
The submission deadline is March 15.
