With the Northern Lights Conference tournament just a week away, the Skyview High School wrestling team made sure it got in plenty of matches this weekend, hosting seven other teams for a day of dual meets at the Skyview Invitational Saturday.
“I thought is was a real good day,” said Skyview coach Neldon Gardner. “Teams got three or four duals in, and got prepped with one last tuneup before the region tournament. I’m real happy with our day.”
Adding to Gardner’s enjoyment was that the Panthers won all four of their duals, beating Palmer, Soldotna, Homer and Kenai to win the team trophy. Kodiak earned the second-place team trophy with wins over East, Soldotna and Homer.
Gardner credited the eight seniors on his team, wrestling in their final home matches, with a great day on the mats. Skyview seniors include Nick Hann, Clark Buffington, Shane Strausbaugh, Eric Rodgers, Tony Gibson, Eli Hutchison, Michael Burlison and Josh Carlon.
“About half our team is seniors, so next year will be a building year for us,” Gardner said.
Both the Kenai and Soldotna teams are in building modes now. Kardinals coach David Boyle was pleased with his team’s progress as the Kardinals won duals with East and Soldotna but finished up with a loss to the Panthers.
“We won our first two matches, and it was fun to wrestle a talented, classy team like Skyview. It inspires us to keep working hard,” Boyle said.
Boyle said he was happy to be able to go to a meet close to home as Kenai Peninsula teams are growing to the point that most can field a full lineup for a dual meet.
“It’s nice to be home. It’s nice to be on the peninsula. We need to be home more often,” Boyle said.
Boyle said he was particularly impressed with his 140-pounder, Cody Booth. Booth finished the day with a tough loss to Strausbaugh.
“He wrestled Strausbaugh tough, and Strausbaugh is one of the premier wrestlers in that weight class,” said Boyle.
Saturday proved to be a tough day for a young Soldotna team. Soldotna coach Bill Carlson said he was hoping the Stars would have been matched up against some teams they hadn’t met in a dual meet previously, but the schedule didn’t work out that way.
“But it was fun in the last match to go up against Kenai. It’s nice to see another young team making progress,” Carlson said.
Among the highlights for the Stars were Jess Carlson’s return to the mat after missing time do to injury, and some solid wins by 275-pounder Matt Strieby.
Carlson also appreciated the effort of Colton Carroll, who wrestled hard despite not feeling so hot.
“He wrestled when he didn’t feel like it, and he came away with some important points for us. So far this season, he has only one loss in overtime,” Carlson said.
Homer lost 103-pounder Ben Daigle when the freshman suffered broken bones in his hand during a match against Kodiak.
“It’s unfortunate. It’s a bad time for something like that (just before the conference tournament), but he’s just a freshman, so he’s got three more years ahead of him,” Perk said.
On the brighter side, Simeon Daigle, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, had a solid day, fending off a challenge from Kodiak’s Steven Gauna.
“Sim stayed in the hunt. He got down but he kept at it and ended up pinning him. He’s definitely in a groove,” Perk said.

Perk also liked what he saw from Ely Roche and Michael Fielding at 215 and 275, respectively.
“We haven’t had a whole lot of wins this year, so this weekend helped our confidence,” Perk said.
Perk also said Tris Brymer wrestled tough at 152, and said the Mariners would continue to try to improve heading into the conference tournament.
“We wrestle good for three or four minutes, then we make that one fatal mistake. We’ll keep plugging away, one mistake at a time. We’ll keep fixing them,” Perk said.
