Glennallen hockey sweeps Bulldogs

Posted: Sunday, January 22, 2006

The Nikiski Bulldogs hockey team endured two frustrating games this weekend at Jason Peterson Memorial Ice Rink in Nikiski.

The visiting Glennallen Panthers’ size and experience prevailed in their 13-0 victory on Friday and matching 13-0 win on Saturday against the Bulldogs.

“Our experience is very limited right now ... We are very young with quite a few freshmen and sophomores in our starting lineup,” Nikiski coach Mario Bird said.

On Saturday, the Panthers mirrored their aggressive play from the previous game against the Bulldogs and used a seven-goal burst in the second period to wipe out Nikiski.

Neither team started the game very aggressive, but Glennallen was able to start rolling with six minutes gone by in the first period, after Dillon Sonderguard scored the first goal of the game.

Glennallen added two more goals in the final four minutes of the first period before the second-period outburst.

“They (Glennallen) have two very skilled players (Anthony Sonderguard and Kyle Nelson) who can really control the game at any time they want,” Bird said.

In the two games against the Bulldogs, Sonderguard totaled eight goals and five assists, while Nelson had four goals and four assists. Sonderguard’s brother, Dillon, added four goals and two assists as well.

Nikiski spent most of its time on the ice playing defense as the Bulldogs were outshot 51-8 on Saturday and 48-7 Friday.

On Friday, the Panthers notched five goals in the first period and added five more in the second period as they cruised on for the win. Nikiski wasn’t able to get a shot off in the third period while Anthony Sonderguard managed to net all three goals of the period.

Despite the scores, Bird looked to the future, “I feel that in two or three years we will be able to really compete in this conference. We have a bright future, but it’s just an experience process now.”

Nikiski’s next game is also at home when the Bulldogs face the Homer Mariners Friday at 7:00 p.m.
