KayHi boys stop Stars

Soldotna's boys built a 33-21 lead by halftime, but Ketchikan scored 48 second-half points to SoHi's 23 to earn a 69-56, come-from-behind victory in the first round of the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School on Thursday.

Blaine Carver paced SoHi with 21 points. He shot 9-of-14 from the field. Jeff Whicker had a team-high 34 points for the Kings. Twenty-seven of those were scored in the second half. Whicker went 13-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point land.

Ketchikan shot 56.5 percent from the field. SoHi shot 41.8 percent.

Thirty of Ketchikan's points came from 3-pointers.

The Stars take on Kodiak today at 4:30 p.m. Ketchikan will play Dimond at 8 p.m. The Lynx, the defending state champions, topped the Bears 70-37 on Thursday.

In other Shootout action Thursday, Nome's boys defeated Colony 68-60.

Nome's 16-9 second quarter gave it a lead too great for Colony to overcome. The Nanooks held a 10-point lead after the first half. Colony put up 33 second-half points to Nome's 31.

Mason Evans had a team-high 16 points for Nome. Tim Sullivan had 15. John Palmer led the Knights with 20 points. Nome will take on North Pole today at 6:15 p.m. Colony will face Grace Christian at 2:45 p.m.

North Pole notched an opening-round, 59-51 win over Grace Christian. The winner of today's North Pole-Nome matchup will move on to the championship game on Saturday.

The Patriots built on the four-point halftime lead and put up 25 second-half points to the Grizzlies' 21.

Kody Broderick led North Pole with 16 points. Caleb Davis had a team-high 17 points for Grace.

The seventh-eighth-place game will be at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. The fourth-sixth-place game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The third-fifth-place matchup is slated for a 5:15 p.m. tipoff and the championship game will begin at 7 p.m.

East T-Bird Classic

The Wasilla girls basketball team defeated Soldotna 61-52 in the first round of the T-Bird Classic hosted by East High in Anchorage.

After being down 27-11 at the half, SoHi scored 41 second-half points. But Wasilla's 34 points in the final two quarters were enough to hold on for the win.

Kailee Skjold had a team-high 15 points for the Stars. Alex Imoe led the Warriors with 12.

Skjold also led in rebounds with 11. SoHi had 32 as a team.

Kelsey Cottle had a team-high 13 boards for Wasilla. The Warriors had 43 rebounds as a team.

SoHi will face Thunder Mountain today at 3:45 p.m. East, which will play Wasilla at 7:30 p.m., defeated Thunder Mountain 69-25.

In other tournament action, Colony defeated West Anchorage 49-39. The Knights will take on Ketchikan today at 5:45 p.m. The Kings defeated Palmer 56-40 on Thursday. The Moose will play West at 2:15 p.m. today.

The seventh-eighth-place game will start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The fifth-sixth place game is set for 3 p.m. The third-fourth-matchup will start at 4:30 p.m. and the championship will start at 6 p.m.

Cordova Tip Off

Kenai Central's girls opened the Cordova Tip Off with a 56-49 win over Valdez.

The Kardinals held a 24-23 advantage going into the second half. The Kards put up 32 second-half points to the Buccaneers' 26.

Raquel Young led Kenai with 23 points. Seven different players tallied points in the win for Kenai.

Valdez also had seven players contribute to the scoring.

The Kards face off against Wrangell today at 3 p.m. and Cordova on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Kenai's boys also began the tourney with a win, defeating Valdez 47-36.

After a close first quarter, the Kards scored 14 second-quarter points to hold a 26-17 advantage at the half. Kenai outscored Valdez 21-19 in the final two periods.

Tyler Spalding paced the Kardinals with 11 points. Eleven Kenai players recorded points in the game.

George Keeney led the Buccaneers with 15 points.

Kenai started out slow and did not have enough defensive intensity, Kards head coach Ken Felchle said. But his team corrected that in the second half, he said.

With more intensity and patience, Kenai had a solid third quarter and was able to close out the game against a respectable Valdez squad, Felchle said.

The Kards take on Wrangell today at 4:30 p.m. and Cordova on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

ConocoPhillips/Warrior Rumble

In boys action at the ConocoPhillips/Warrior Rumble, Homer's junior varsity topped Nikolaevsk 52-49 on Thursday. The Mariners had four players in double figures, while Mark Fefelov paced the Warriors with 13 points.

In girls action, Kwethluk knocked off Nikolaevsk 47-33. Elena Phillip led the Kings with 10 points, while Nianiella Dorvall had 13 points for the Warriors. In the other girls game, Nenana topped the Homer junior varsity 41-33.
