Drug agents make second cocaine bust at Fairbanks airport

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- For the second time in little over a week, drug agents have caught a man trying to smuggle 2 kilograms of cocaine into Fairbanks though his luggage.

Local agents from the statewide drug enforcement unit arrested Jim Rainwater, 25, of Seattle near the Fairbanks International Airport baggage claim at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Alaska State Trooper Sgt. J.R. Roberts.

He was charged by federal prosecutors with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Roberts said a trooper dog, Nissan, sniffed out the drugs and alerted agents. Nissan and handler Larry Erickson, were recently transferred to the unit.

Drug agents worked with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in Anchorage.

Roberts said there is no connection between Rainwater and Cornelius Tica, 22, of Los Angeles, arrested Jan. 12 for trying to smuggle 2 kilos, or roughly 4.4 pounds, of cocaine in his luggage.
