Fishing derby could combat pike problem

Posted: Monday, January 23, 2006

I read today in the (Anchorage Daily News) about the Pike in Scout Lake eating all the juvenile trout and salmon. Scout Lake will not be stocked because of this. Soon, the Pike will take out many other lakes if not checked.

So how about a year-long pike derby? Modest prizes could be given away for the most caught in a day, a year, and the biggest. Do not make the biggest the grand prize, as this will result in smaller Pike being thrown back. We need a really strong effort to control this prey species before chemical use becomes the only answer. Our sporting goods stores will be affected and so perhaps they could help with derby donations.

It doesn’t have to be a huge deal. The (chamber of commerce), etc. doesn’t need to spend money on this idea. Just support and provide the monitoring of catches, or the (Department of Fish and Game) could do this.

Pike can and will ruin tourism here if we do nothing about abatement, and soon!
