The Nikiski High School wrestling team will hold an Ice Fishing Derby Fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 5, on Island Lake in Nikiski. Registration and sign-in starts at 9:30 a.m. and lines go in the water at 10 a.m. Prizes include a gas powered ice auger donated by Trustworthy Hardware in Soldotna, and much more. Derby tickets are $15 for ages 15 and under and $20 for ages 16 and above. Prizes awarded in both age categories for largest Dolly Varden, largest rainbow, and smallest fish.
The Slikok Creek Grange will hold its monthly meeting at Mugz Coffee House in the Blazy Mall in Soldotna on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Potluck will be at 6:30 p.m., and the regular meeting at 7 p.m. We encourage families, 4-H folks and anyone interested in agriculture, sustainiaility, gardening and/or any community related subjects to join us. Monthly meetings of Teens Again Tobacco Use -- T.A.T.U. -- begin Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. to discuss various topics and ways to help our community take a stand against tobacco. The Tikahtnu Chapter of DeMolay and Squires, young mens' leadership organizations, are holding an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 for parents and young men between the ages of 9 and 21. The Seward Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitors Bureau announces that applications for the 84th Annual Mount Marathon Race are being accepted. Runners hoping to race in 2011 must submit their completed application by midnight on March 31. Applications can be completed online at www.seward.com. Application fees are $45 for adults and $25 for junior runners. Veterans and 2010 finishers have priority, with the remaining slots filled through a lottery system. Tsalteshi Trails 7th Annual She Can Ski event will be Feb. 6, at the Tsalteshi trailhead at Skyview High school. The 5k classic event starts at 11:30 a.m. and skate at 12:30 p.m. This is a partner event, so bring your friends and relatives, all ages and abilities welcome. Festive attire is always encouraged.
