ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A federal agency is looking for companies interested in exploring oil and gas opportunities in Norton Basin as a way perhaps to bring natural gas to western Alaska communities.
John Goll, Alaska regional director for the Minerals Management Service, said the largely unexplored area could contain substantial natural gas resources that not only could be exported but used for local communities.
''What we hope is some enterprising company can find an economical way to make this happen,'' he said Wednesday in a statement.
The call for interested companies is the first step in an 18-month process. The Minerals Management Service will use the response to decide whether to proceed with leasing federal tracts on the outer continental shelf.
More information on the proposed sale is available by calling 907-271-6070 or 1-800-764-2627.
