Several measures address education funding

The Legislature, only one week into its first session, already is considering a number of bills related to education funding.

House Bill 26 would raise the base student allocation from $4,010 per student to $4,128 per student, effective July 1.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak. It is under consideration by the House Special Committee on Education.

Senate Bill 1 would raise the base student allocation from $4,010 per student to $4,090 per student, effective July 1.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. Gary Wilken, R-Fairbanks, and co-sponsored by Sens. Bettye Davis, D-Anchorage and Thomas Wagoner, R-Kenai. It is under consideration by the Senate Health, Education and Social Services Committee.

Senate Bill 3 would mandate annual increases to the base student allocation based on the Consumer Price Index for Anchorage in the preceding fiscal year.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. Davis and co-sponsored by Sens. Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage and Kim Elton, D-Juneau. It is under consideration by the Senate Health, Education and Social Services Committee.

Senate Bill 11 also would mandate annual increases to the base student allocation based on the Consumer Price Index for Anchorage, but in the preceding calendar year.

It was sponsored by Sen. Gretchen Guess, D-Anchorage and co-sponsored by Sens. Ellis and Elton. It is under consideration by the Senate Health, Education and Social Services Committee.

Senate Bill 14 would raise the base student allocation from $4,010 per student to $4,110 per student, effective July 1.

The bill was sponsored by Wagoner and co-sponsored by Wilken. It is under consideration by the Senate Health, Education and Social Services Committee.
