Area skiers compete in Besh Cup
Area skiers competed in Besh Cup No. 4 Sunday at Chugiak High School. The six Besh Cup series are used to choose the Junior Nationals and Arctic Winter Games teams. Seniors and masters also use the event to get in some racing.
Andy Liebner, a graduate of Soldotna High School, won the 7.5-kilometer men’s classic race with a time of 23 minutes, 27.7 seconds. Liebner beat runner-up David Norris by 12 seconds. Also from the peninsula, Trent Semmens of Kenai Central was 24th in 25:51.4, Morgan Jones of Homer was 32nd in 26:23.1, Christopher Hall of Kenai Central was 34th in 26:29.8, Erick Romig of Skyview was 41st in 26:48.6, Max Milliron of Soldotna was 47th in 27:27.9, Dustin Reid of Kenai Central was 52nd in 27:49.6, Taylor Karnikis of Skyview was 61st in 28:25.3, Caleb Chase of Soldotna was 64th in 28:32.5, Tommy Honer of Skyview was 68th in 28:44.5, Michael Mumm of the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club was 69th in 28:49.6, David Apperson of Seward was 70th in 28:55.8, Jens Klaar of the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club was 72nd in 29:03.5, Eddie French of Soldotna was 77th in 29:14.0, Gus Beck of Homer was 79th in 29:28.7, Kirk Louthan of Kenai Central was 91st in 30:34.9, Kenneth Jones of the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club was 99th in 32:20.4 and Jon Berryman of the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club was 100th in 32:52.8.
In the Junior 3-Junior 4 boys 3-kilometer classic, Eric Ryan won with a time of 12:53.9. Anders Nyquist of Kenai Middle finished fifth in 15:18.8.
In the women’s 7.5-kilometer race, Olympian Kikkan Randall won in 25:14.1. Homer graduate Aleta Phelps was sixth in 28:29.4, Seward’s Sarah Glaser was 25th in 31:04.7, Homer’s Erika Klaar was 42nd in 32:23.6, Homer’s Claire Laukitis was 59th in 34:22.0, Soldotna Middle School’s Kailey Mucha was 62nd in 34:42.3, Homer’s Emma Teal Laukitis was 63rd in 35:01.9, Kenai Middle School’s Maya Johnson was 69th in 36:31.7 and Cook Inlet Academy’s Danielle Rehm was 84th in 42:13.9.
In the girls Junior 3 3-kilometer race, Soldotna Middle School’s Bree Mucha was 20th in 20:18.4.
Saturday, Johnson was 29th overall in the girls Junior 2-Junior 3 3-kilometer freestyle with a time of 14:02.0. Also Saturday, Nyquist was 31st overall in the Junior 2-Junior 3 3-kilometer race with a time of 12:50.9.
