Kenai girls take tourney

Kenai Central's girls basketball team cruised to a 52-28 win over Cordova to claim the Cordova Tip Off tournament championship on Saturday. Kenai went 3-0 in the round-robin tourney.

The Kardinals built a 27-13 lead by halftime. They added to that lead and scored 20 third-quarter points to Cordova's three.

Raquel Young scored a team-high 18 points for the Kards. Samantha Hull had 15.

Misa Webber paced the Wolverines with 10 points.

Young, Hull, Lexi Beeson and Morgan Wensley were named to the all-tournament team. Beeson also won the 3-point shooting contest.

Kenai's boys lost to Cordova 55-38 and took second in the tournament.

Cordova scored 18 points in the second and third quarters. Tyler Spalding led Kenai with 19 points. Christian Brockert had a team-high 20 points for Cordova. Twelve came from 3-point land.

The Wolverines nailed eight 3-pointers in the game.

Spalding, AJ Hull and Bo Reilly were named to the all-tournament team.

In Friday girls action, Kenai topped Wrangell 52-21. Morgan Wensley had 13 points for the Kardinals, while Lexi Beeson had 10 points.

In Friday boys action, the Kardinals topped the Wolves 56-28. Reilly paced the Kardinals with 14 points, while Al Hull had 13 points and Billy Kiefer added 10 points.

Seward boys 56, ACS 47

Michael Thorn poured in 24 points on Friday as the host Seahawks notched a Southcentral Conference victory over the Lions.

Seward, which also received 19 points from Andrew Buchanan, led 43-39 at the end of three quarters, then held the Lions to eight points in the final eight minutes. Aaron Richwine had 16 points for the Lions, while Luke Charters added 10.

The Lions girls defeated the Seahawks 44-24 on Friday.

Ninilchik boys 76, Nanwalek 42

The host Wolverines cruised past the Eagles on Friday in nonconference play.

Sam Bennett had 20 points for the Wolverines, while Jefferson Klapak had 19 and Hunter Cooper had 12. For Nanwalek, Matthew Gain had 13 points, while Vladimir Moonin pitched in with 10 points.

Grace girls 33, Homer 27

Mackenze Fredrickson pumped in 17 points on Friday to lead the visiting Grizzlies past the Mariners in nonconference action. Ashley Ketelle had eight points for Homer.

Cougars 74, Seahawks 59

Service freshmen Adam Klie's 26 points led the Cougars to a win over the visiting Seahawks in nonconference play on Saturday.

Andrew Buchanan led Seward with 19 points and Michael Thorn had 14.

CIA 69, Nanwalek 45

Matthew Moffis scored 20 points to lead Cook Inlet Academy's boys over Nanwalek in nonconference play on Saturday.

Jacob Grinestaff followed Moffis with 18 points and Cody Munn chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.

Eagles 47, Wolverines 37

CIA senior Amie Smithwick scored a team-high 19 points in the Eagles nonconference win over South's JV team Saturday.

Tiana McGahan recorded 13 points and Tiffany Smith had nine.

Panthers 35, Lady Mariners 19

Skyview's girls defeated the Lady Mariners in Homer on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference action. Casee Penrod paced the Panthers with 12 points, while Melissa Wood had eight points for the Mariners.

Mariners 55, Panthers 51, OT

Homer held on for a Northern Lights Conference victory over the Panthers on Saturday in Homer. Devon Kennelty and Michael Pate each had 12 points for Homer, while Albert White had 17 points and Jordan Jones had 12 points for Skyview.

Wolverines 78, Eagles 60

Ninilchik's boys cruised to a win over Whittier on Saturday. Ninilchik held a 38-29 lead at the half and added 40 more points in the second half.

Jefferson Klapak led Ninilchik with 25 points. Sam Bennett and Billy Riley each had 11 and Hunter Cooper and Quinn Bennett both chipped in 10. Nick Swain paced the Ealges with 37 points.

Wolverines 42, Sea Otters 35, OT

Ninilchik's girls erased a three-point halftime deficit in the third quarter and matched Seldovia's six points in the fourth to force overtime. The Wolverines outscored the Sea Otters 9-2 in extra time to get the win.

Linsey Rohr led Ninilchik with 13 points. Sarah Geagel paced Seldovia with 11.

Dimond Shootout

Soldotna's boys lost 49-44 to Colony in the fourth-sixth place game of the 2010 Prep Shootout at Dimond on Saturday. Defending state champion Dimond defeated Nome 75-65 to win the tournament title.

SoHi grabbed a four-point lead after the opening eight minutes but Colony came back in the second. The Knights held a two-point lead at halftime.

Colony outscored the Stars 12-9 in the third period. The two teams put up 13 apiece in the final quarter.

John Palmer paced Colony with 28 points. Boomer Blossom led SoHi with 19.

The Knights shot 11-of-12 from the line. SoHi went 5-of-11.

Colony shot 47 percent from the field. SoHi shot 34 percent.

Ketchikan claimed third place with a 58-33 win over North Pole in the third-fifth place game.

The Kings outscored the Patriots in each of the four quarters.

Kodiak defeated Grace 48-47 in the seventh-eighth place matchup on Saturday. The Bears led 40-32 after three quarters. Grace outscored the Bears 15-8 in the final quarter, but came up just shy of tying the game.

Colony defeated Grace 49-41 on Friday. SoHi beat Kodiak 53-45.

The Stars jumped out to a 29-20 lead by halftime and held on for the win.

Blossom had a team-high 17 points for the Stars. Seven SoHi players tallied points.

In other Friday action, Nome beat North Pole 58-47. Dimond defeated Ketchikan 87-74.

T-Bird Classic

Soldotna's girls lost a close, 47-44 game to West High in the fifth-sixth place matchup in the East T-Bird Classic on Saturday. Ketchikan won the tournament with a 54-40 victory over Wasilla.

The Stars led 22-20 after the first half. The Eagles cut that lead to one after the third quarter. West outscored SoHi 13-9 in the final eight minutes to win the game.

Kailee Skjold paced the Stars with 16 points. Tessla Rennie led West with 18 points.

SoHi made 17 of 60 field goal attempts. West shot 19-of-61 from the field.

Colony beat East 59-49 in the third-fourth place matchup.

In the seventh-eighth place game, Palmer defeated Thunder Mountain 53-25. The Moose needed just eight minutes to rack up as many points as Thunder Mountain scored all game.

Kendal Venzke led the Moose with 13 points. The Falcons had three players with six points.

The Stars defeated Thunder Mountain 56-43 in Friday T-Bird action. Megan Hardy led SoHi with 14 points. Jonelle Staveland had a team-high 16 points for Thunder Mountain.

In other Friday action, Ketchikan defeated Colony 47-37. Wasilla beat East 62-49 and West notched a 50-38 win over Palmer.

ConocoPhillips/Warrior Rumble

The Nenana girls defeated Kwethluk 50-48 to claim the ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble title on Saturday.

The Lynx held a 25-20 lead at the half. Kwethluk scored 28 second-half points to Nenana's 25. Haley Tyler led Nenana with 30 points. Krysta Michael paced Kwethluk with 12.

King Cove's boys notched a 63-46 win over host Nikolaevsk. The T-Jacks won the boys title.

King Cove held a one-point lead after the first half. The T-Jacks put up 34 second-half points to the Warriors' 18.

Jonny Samuelson had a team-high 37 points for King Cove. Jonah Yakunin led Nikolaevsk with 17.

In other Saturday action, the King Cove girls defeated Nikolaevsk 34-25.

After trailing by 13, the Warriors cut the deficit to three after the third quarter. But King Cove outscored Nikolaevsk 10-6 in the final eight minutes for the win.

Nianiella Dorvall led the Warriors with 10 points. Raylene Kochuten paced the Rookies with nine points.

Homer's boys JV squad beat Nenana 47-43. Seven Mariners scored points. Edwin Waskey led the Lynx with 13.

Nikolaevsk's boys notched a 52-40 win over Nenana in Friday Warrior Rumble action.

The Warriors held a 25-18 lead at the half. They put up 27 second-half points to Nenana's 22.

Christopher Kalugin had a team-high 31 points for Nikolaevsk. He made five 3-pointers in the game.

Tim Standifer paced the Lynx with 19 points.

Nenana's girls defeated Nikolaevsk 40-21 on Friday. After a 18-14 lead at the half, Nenana scored 16 third-quarter points to Nikolaevsk's two.

Haley Tyler paced the Lynx with 23 points. Five of seven Warriors tallied points.

In other Friday girls action, Kwethluk defeated King Cove 42-33. Elena Rivers had a team-high 12 points for Kwethluk. Honey Lon Wilson (check) led King Cove with 13.

In other Friday boys action, King Cove beat Homer's JV team 55-30 on Friday. Jonny Sameulson scored 26 points for King Cove.

Nikolaevsk's Christopher Kalugin, Jonah Yakunin and Mark Fefelov were named to the all-tournament team. Nenana's Tim Standifer and Edwin Waskey were, too. Foster Shannon and Dylan Day of Homer made the all-tournament team. King Cove's Jordan Hamilton was also named to the all-tournament team. King Cove's Jonny Samuelson was named boys MVP.

On the girls side, Kwethluk had three players named to the all-tournament team. They were Krystal Michael, Twyla George and Elena Rivers. Nikolaevsk's Sarah Holub and Kimmie Payne were, too. Honey Lou Wilson represented King Cove on the all-tournament team. Nenana's Hailey Tyler and Kimberlee Miller earned spots as well. Nenana's Hailey Tyler was named girls MVP.
