Special teams doom Bears in Canada

A disastrous performance by Kenai River on special teams led to a 6-1 loss to Dawson Creek (British Columbia) on Sunday in Canada.

The Brown Bears allowed the Rage to go 3-for-9 on the power play in front of 566 fans. Kenai River went 0-for-12 on the power play, and also gave up a shorthanded goal.

Kenai River had 55 penalty minutes on 18 infractions, while Dawson Creek committed 20 infractions for 59 minutes.

Despite the loss, Kenai River remains comfortably in position to make the North American Hockey League playoffs. The top four teams in the West Division play in the postseason, and the Brown Bears (19-17-4) are in fourth place with 42 points. Wenatchee (Wash.) is in third place with 48 points.

Dawson Creek improved to 15-25-2. With 32 points, the Rage are now tied with Fresno (Calif.) for fifth place.

The Brown Bears finish their nine-game road trip with three games in Fresno. The games are Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. Alaska Standard Time, Friday at 6:35 p.m. AST and Saturday at 6:35 p.m. AST.

The Brown Bears went 2-1 to start the road trip in Wenatchee, then had earned three points the first two nights in Dawson Creek before the blowout loss.

Dawson Creek outshot the Brown Bears 37-30, but the game was not close.

The Rage scored the first four goals of the game -- three on the power play and one shorthanded. Jason Wark and Josh Hartley scored power-play goals for Dawson Creek in the first period.

Scott Fellnermayr started the second-period scoring with a shorthanded tally, while Tyson McCallum then added a power-play goal.

The Brown Bears lone goal came with 53 seconds left in the second period, when Alex Frere collected his fourth goal and fifth point of the three-game series.

The Rage poured it on in the third period when Evan Ripley and Carter Page scored unassisted.

Josh Benton made 31 saves for the Brown Bears, while Edward Dyson had 29 saves for the Rage.
