JUNEAU (AP) -- An Anchorage activist who is backing an initiative to create a natural gas pipeline authority has announced he's running for lieutenant governor.

Scott Heyworth, a 52-year-old Anchorage longshoreman, said he filed notice of intent to run Wednesday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

So far he's the only Democrat in the race for lieutenant governor.

Heyworth backs an initiative to create a new state agency called the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority, which would own a proposed natural gas pipeline to Valdez.
