Gloria Beckman of Anchorage works on an ice sculpture of Gimli, the dwarf from the "Lord of the Rings" movies, in the parking lot of Blakeley's Auction Co. in Soldotna on Thursday morning. She and Scott Hanson of Soldotna are carving sculptures at area businesses in preparation for the Peninsula Winter Games, which includes an ice sculpting contest beginning Thursday. Beckman did the detail work on Gimli, while Hanson carved arms and legs from blocks of ice to lay at Gimli's feet to represent his vanquished orc foes. "I wanted to do something different," Hanson said of the sculpture.
