Gatti claims WBC junior welterweight title

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. It had none of the drama of his Micky Ward wars, but Arturo Gatti won more than respect Saturday, hammering out a 12-round decision over Gianluca Branco to capture the WBC junior welterweight title. Gamely fighting with an injured hand for most of the night, Gatti (37-6) scored a 10-round knockdown and handed the Italian champion his first loss ever before a home-state crowd of 11,237.

Regents approve five-year contract for Stoops

TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona Board of Regents approved a five-year contract for Mike Stoops, the new head of the University of Arizona football program. The contract approved Friday guarantees he'll be paid $650,000 a year with the potential for $630,000 more for meeting team performance goals. The new contract contains ''precisely the same terms'' as the one-year contract Stoops signed with the University of Arizona on Dec. 1 but extends it through Dec. 31, 2008, UA President Peter Likins said.
