Former Soldotna resident Roland "Rollie" Henry Duyck died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore. He was 69.
Recitation of the holy rosary took place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Visitation Catholic Church, 4285 N.W. Visitation Road, Verboort, Ore. A funeral Mass followed at 11 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church. Father Scott VanDeHey officiated. Commitment rites were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Verboort.
Mr. Duyck was born Nov. 13, 1935, in Roy, Ore. He was the fourth of 14 children born to George and Cecelia (VanDyke) Duyck. He was raised and received his early education at St. Francis Grade School in Roy and went to high school in Banks, Ore. He graduated from Banks High School in 1953.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and served his country for one year before being honorably discharged in 1955 as a private first class. He went on to serve eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Mr. Duyck was a farmer all of his working life. He raised row crops on a farm outside Cornelius, Ore. He also raised cucumbers, strawberries, beans, grains and clover seed. He custom farmed throughout Washington County. He retired in 1998. Following retirement he moved to Soldotna. In 2004 he moved back to Cornelius to be closer to his family.
Some of his hobbies and special interests were fishing, hunting, clam digging and crabbing. He also enjoyed shooting, socializing with his friends and family, playing cribbage, telling long old stories and traveling. Mr. Duyck was the owner of "Roland Henry's Private Reserve" Winery and he enjoyed making and sampling wine.
He is preceded in death by his father, George, and brothers, Leroy and Ken.
Survivors include his mother, Cecelia of Beaverton, Ore.; daughters and their spouses, Sandy and Ken Knox of Forest Grove, Ore., and Joyce and Albert "Albie" Vanderzanden of Verboort; sons, Wayne Duyck of Hillsboro and Roger and Kim Duyck of Forest Grove; grandchildren, Jeremy and Ricky Knox, Josh, Kim Jason and Kelsy Vanderzanden, Corey Weston and Rachelle Duyck; sisters, Audrey Hertel, Marilyn Grover, Sharon Bidstrip, Dorothy Umeda, Lorraine Klein, Lorna Newby and Sue Peterson; and brothers, Lloyd, Walt, Gary and Steve Duyck.
The family suggest that contributions be made in Mr. Duyck's name to the Visitation Cemetery Endowment Fund.
Funeral arrangements were made by Duyck and VanDeHey Funeral Home of Forest Grove.
