Flood watch issued for lower Kenai River

Posted: Thursday, January 25, 2007

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the lower Kenai River, from Skilak Lake to its mouth. The river level has been rising for several days, possibly due to the release of the Skilak Glacier dammed lake.

Water levels may continue to rise, which could cause the ice cover to break up and form ice jams. Rapid rises in water levels can occur upstream of an ice jam.

A flood watch means there is potential for flooding.
